How To Grease A Cast Iron Skillet

At Our Southern Odyssey we wanted to provide you with a guide on how to grease a cast iron skillet.  Here is a step-by-step guide that shows how to prepare a skillet when cooking bread in a seasoned cast iron skillet.  Cast iron makes a great skillet to cook bread in, especially Cornbread or our Southern Grain-free Cornbread.  In choosing a skillet, cast iron holds heat well and creates an even cooking surface. Follow the steps below to be successful in having a well greased cast iron skillet for cooking bread.

Directions:

Before starting make sure you have a well seasoned cast iron skillet.  If the skillet is not well seasoned, the bread will stick to the bottom of the skillet.  First, you will need a cast iron skillet and a spoon full of coconut oil.  Second, dollop the coconut oil from the spoon into the center of the cast iron skillet.  The size of the cast iron skillet that we use is a number seven 10 1/4”.  Third, using the back of the spoon spread the coconut oil to cover the bottom and side of the skillet.  We have provided a step-by-step guide that shows all the steps.  Finally, make sure that the sides are also coated well with the coconut oil.  When the inside of the skillet is covered with oil place the cast iron skillet in the oven to heat before adding the batter.  It will take approximately 5 to 10 minutes for the skillet to reach the desired temperature to cook bread.

Do not forget to use potholders when removing the cast iron skillet from the oven.  The skillet will be extremely hot.  After the cast iron skillet has been heated, remove the skillet from the oven and pour the batter into the hot skillet.  Make sure the batter covers the bottom of the pan evenly.  Now place the skillet back into the oven to bake.  This is the way we bake our Grain-Free Cornbread in a cast iron skillet.
